Now or Later? The Biggest Benefit Of Remote Work May Not Be Location Independence

In a recent article, Doist CEO, Amir Salihefendic, states, “While I think remote work is the future, I believe that asynchronous communication is an even more important factor in team productivity, whether your team is remote or not.”

 

Fascinating! This revolutionary position defends that the benefits of distributing a team aren’t (only) due to the fact that we’re separated from each other physically, but that we’re separated from each other temporally too. And he should know – as the leader of a 100% remote team, Amir has been developing his strategies and tools for international team management for almost a decade. 

 

But wait, what’s wrong with synchronous communication? Is the traditional method of face-to-face teamwork going to dissolve in the future of work? Probably not. In-person, real-time connection is vital to human sociology. However, when depended on as the exclusive or primary method of working, it can stunt sustainable productivity due to: 

  • Interruptions and distractions
  • Time drains 
  • Reactivity and stress

 

In short, by enabling your workers to have more control over their workday, you’re also giving them more control over their headspace, which is likely to result in more attention to detail and less stress, which then translates into higher output quality, stronger product innovation, and longer employee retention. 

 

So, how can your team integrate more asynchronous communication into your workflows? To get started, Doist recommends the following action steps (more details in the original article):  

  1. Build transparent online team communication channels 
  2. Share interactive documents in the cloud with commenting and editing permissions enabled 
  3. Send agendas, questions, and homework prior to synchronous events like meetings, interviews, and retreats.
  4. Send video recordings to deliver information instead of scheduling a conference call
  5. Assign tasks and review accountability using project management software instead of or in addition to standups
  6. Decentralize decision making by empowering multiple sources of authority  

 

Whether or not you are ready to enable mobility in your workforce, you can start capitalizing on the benefits of remote work immediately by adopting one or several of these methods. When you do, you’re sure to see great results not only professionally, but also personally, because as Amir described, “Not only does async produce the best work results, but it also lets people do more meaningful work and live freer, more fulfilled lives.”
