How to Plan Your Last Minute Trip to Nomad City!

We’re officially less than a week away from our second edition of Nomad City! For those of you who haven’t planned your trip to the gorgeous city of Las Palmas yet, there’s still time to do so without breaking the bank. With this helpful guide, you’ll be able to find flights, accommodations, and even coworking spaces to connect remotely while you network with other like-minded individuals and learn about the best approaches to working remotely.

Book your flights

While the price of flights will depend on where you’re coming from, our favorite search engines for finding the best deals are Skyscanner, Momondo, and Google Flights. If you want to optimize your search results, it’s recommended that you use all three search engines to find that perfect price and route.

One of the benefits of hosting Nomad City in sunny Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is that you can fly there from most major hub cities in Europe and North America. If you’re coming from the United States, for example, you could fly directly to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid, or Barcelona, and then catch a connecting flight to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (LPA). By following this approach, you’ll have more opportunities of finding low prices and shorter routes. Let’s check out a couple itineraries below to give you an idea of what you can expect!

*Dates used for the following itineraries were September 16th-25th, 2017, so prices may vary depending on your arrival and departure dates*

If you’re coming from the United States…
San Francisco → Paris → Las Palmas de Gran Canaria = $1243 USD
Los Angeles → Barcelona → Las Palmas de Gran Canaria = $825 USD
New York (JFK) → Boston → Madrid → Las Palmas de Gran Canaria = $757 USD
Boston → Ponta Delgada → Las Palmas de Gran Canaria = $910 USD
Newark → Boston → Madrid → Las Palmas de Gran Canaria $767 USD

If you’re coming from Canada…
Vancouver → Barcelona → Las Palmas = $1747 CAD
Montreal → Madrid → Las Palmas = $1037 CAD
Toronto → Madrid → Las Palmas = $1126 CAD

Find Accommodation in Las Palmas

Now that you’ve figured out how you’re getting to Las Palmas, let’s take a look at some of the island’s most popular places to stay! Although there are a wide variety of accommodations to choose from, we’ve already done the hard work for you and listed a few of our favorite hotels that offer close proximity to Nomad City’s venues and activities, excellent customer service, and full amenities (including wifi throughout the hotels so you can still connect remotely)!

Hotel Astoria (3 stars): Located in the heart of the financial district of Las Palmas, Hotel Astoria is perfect for a work trip at an affordable price. Guests may use the business lounge with computers and printer access, take a dip in the pool (located on their rooftop), or walk three blocks to Las Canteras, one of Las Palmas’ most popular beaches. Rooms at Hotel Astoria are decorated with dark wood furnishings and have been recently renovated, so you’ll enjoy its classic style and updated facilities.

Cantur City Hotel (4 stars): Just a few steps away from Las Canteras, the Cantur City Hotel provides its guests with a variety of extras, such as a well-equipped rooftop terrace with a hot tub, pool, and bar; a guest pass for the Talasoterapia Las Canteras Spa across the street, babysitting service, and even airport shuttle rides! To top it all off, they also provide a list of things to do in Las Palmas, along with helpful descriptions.

Hotel Fataga (4 stars): Hotel Fataga, designed with business tourists in mind, is also located in the financial district of Las Palmas and offers ample meeting rooms, conference halls, and business lounges for its guests. In addition to its professional ambiance, they offer a rooftop terrace for adults only so you can take time for yourself and relax by the pool without any distractions. Rooms at Hotel Fataga are spacious, new, and air-conditioned too!

For those of you who prefer the “home away from home” vibe, Canarias Getaway is offering a 5% discount for all Nomad City attendees. Canarias Getaway, an apartment and home rental agency that started in Las Palmas in 2014, has lots of homes to choose from with impressive views, modern furnishings, and unbeatable locations. To get the discount, all you have to do is mention that you’re attending Nomad City in your reservation and they’ll deduct 5% of your rental price immediately!

Where to Connect Remotely on the Island

Thanks to Las Palmas’ year-round sunshine, low cost of living, and friendly locals, the island has become home to hundreds of digital nomads over the last couple years. With so many remote workers living in Las Palmas, it’s no wonder they have plenty of coworking spaces and cool cafés for you to set up your office away from home.

GoCoworking: This space is filled with natural light, sleek white furnishings, and an inviting “chill out” area with brightly colored chairs and turf located on its rooftop! They offer several different packages in terms of pricing, but we recommend selecting the daily rate (15 euros per day) or save some cash by selecting the one week rate (60 euros per week).

CoCoworking: This is a great spot for you location-independent individuals who love to hit the beach after work. In just 9 minutes, you’ll be at Las Canteras, where you can surf, swim, or lay out in the sun. On top of that, they make Mondays sweeter for everyone by giving free access to their space and occasionally do partnered events with the surf school Buena Onda for sunset surf lessons! Claim your spot for just 8 euros per day.

CoworkingC: What makes CoworkingC so unique is its strong community. Whether it’s meeting for drinks after work or getting together at their monthly Pitch Night, CoworkingC makes you feel part of its family from the beginning. At Pitch Night, members have the opportunity to introduce themselves and present their latest projects, which promotes camaraderie within the office and gives the presenters a chance to ask for feedback. CoworkingC does not have a daily rate, but you can sign up for their 5 day package during your stay in Canarias for 60 euros.

Soppa de Azul: Perfect for the creative type, Soppa de Azul stands out from other coworking spaces for its rotating art gallery, which they use to promote awareness for important issues, rising artists, and more. They’re also located a short distance away from La Puntilla, one of the prime interest points of Las Palmas. For 15 euros a day, you can take in all the beautiful artwork lining the walls from your desk or in the art gallery!

Restation: A coworking and co-living space, Restation is all about work-life balance. With three organized events per week and special programming for businesses such as retreats, master classes, or “workations”, Restation is perfect for those who want to have a more social experience at just 50 euros per week.

The SandBox: One of the newest coworking spaces in town, The SandBox is the perfect place for location-independent individuals who are looking forward to enjoying the waves of Las Canteras, since the space is located two blocks away from the beach. This place offers a cozy feel and allows you to spread out comfortably at its large, wooden tables. At 15 euros per day or 50 euros for a five day pass, you can experience The SandBox yourself!

PaletExpress: A cross between a coworking space and an incubator for startups, PaletExpress often hosts events and presentations from young entrepreneurs looking to launch their product. If you’re interested in meeting local entrepreneurs, this is the best place to connect with them and hear more about their projects.

If you’re used to working at locations that are off the beaten path, such as family-owned coffee shops or secluded beaches, join the Gran Canaria Digital Nomads Facebook group! With over 2,400 location-independent members and growing, you’ll be able to crowdsource and find out where current remote workers like to connect on the island.

Experience all that Las Palmas has to Offer

At Nomad City, we want you to not only be attending the talks and workshops that we’ve planned for you, but also to have fun at our Lifestyle Experiences! Lifestyle Experiences are organized events meant to encourage networking in a more natural way while also getting to know Las Palmas too. Check out what we have planned next week and sign up for your spot today!

Monday, September 18th: Surf and Skate Day

First, we’ll kick off the week with a little surf lesson and breakfast! At this lifestyle experience, you will participate in a “dry surf session” by learning the techniques on special skateboards that imitate the movements of a surfboard, followed by a delicious breakfast and a two hour surf session where you can practice what you’ve learned in the water with other attendees from Nomad City. 39 euros.

Tuesday, September 19th: Shepherd’s Path Hike

If you like to hike, join the fun and climb to the top of Shepherd’s Path, where you will learn from a tour guide how shepherds traditionally produced goat cheese there in the old days. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be able to try some local cheeses, wine, and tapas before making the trek back down to Las Palmas. 39 euros.

Wednesday, September 20th: Dolphin Watching and Hidden Beach by Boat

Let’s hit the water! In this lifestyle experience, you will be able to look for dolphins, whales, and other marine life while you ride in a boat along the coast of Gran Canaria. After a couple hours, the captain will take you and other attendees to a hidden beach called Güi Güi, where you and other attendees will have the spot all to yourselves. 49 euros.

Thursday, September 21st: Urban Lovers – Discover Nomad City

Get to know Las Palmas by completing a creative scavenger hunt throughout the city! You and your team will have to take silly pictures or videos in front of different points of interest around Las Palmas. Once you’ve tired yourself out from running all over town, you will be able to enjoy a delicious brunch with your new friends. 20 euros.

Afterwork Meetups

For those of you who have to work remotely during the day and can’t make the Lifestyle Experiences, have no fear! Every night at 7:00pm, we will be hosting an after-work meetup for all Nomad City attendees at different venues. At these meetups, you’ll be able to let loose, meet new people, and experience the nightlife in Las Palmas. You can check our Nomad City 2017 Program for location and themes for each event. You won’t want to miss out!
