Why Your Business Should Have a Remote Team

Hiring a team of remote workers offers many benefits. When filling positions in a remote team, you can hire employees from almost anywhere in the world. This gives you a better chance of finding the ideal candidate for each role.

However, when working in a more traditional office setting, leaders have the opportunity to use continuous performance management tools. Unfortunately,  you don’t have the ability to supervise remote workers to the same degree. It’s easy to wonder if productivity will suffer.

This is an understandable concern. Luckily, it doesn’t appear to be warranted. Research and surveys indicate that remote workers are actually more productive than their in-office counterparts. The following information will help you better understand why.

 

Fewer Distractions

You might assume that remote employees would be more distracted than employees working in an office setting. After all, when your supervisor isn’t monitoring you, it’s easy to watch TV or browse the internet.

However, surveys actually indicate that employees feel more distracted when working in an office than they do working from home. They also feel as though their overall productivity would increase if they had more chances to work out of the office.

Offices, in fact, can be very disruptive places. Ambient noise, interruptions, and conversations with other coworkers make it difficult to focus on a task. At home, workers find it’s significantly easier to concentrate.

 

Fewer Days Off

Evidence suggests that remote workers take fewer sick days than staff who work in offices. This makes sense. Your remote team is less likely to be exposed to germs, and they’re also less likely to spread germs.

Additionally, remote employees are more willing to work even when they are feeling a little under the weather. They don’t need to commute, so they’re happy to at least get some simple tasks out of the way.

Some managers have also found that remote employees generally take fewer vacation days than the average worker. Since they can work from anywhere, remote staff are willing to take work with them on trips.

 

Higher Engagement

According to the Harvard Business Review, remote employees are generally more engaged than office-based workers.

At first, this may come as a surprise. Employees who work from home aren’t surrounded by the organization’s culture every day. They aren’t at the office, where it should be far more effortless to spread and reaffirm the company’s values.

However, engagement tends to be high among remote workers because they’re simply more satisfied with their jobs. Working from home allows employees to more easily achieve critical work/life balance. Thus, many of the factors that have a negative impact on engagement, such as less time with family, lack of a flexible schedule, and the like, simply aren’t issues.

Of course, managers should still look for ways to monitor their remote teams. Engagement increases when leaders stay in touch. By using the right management software, you can make sure your remote employees remain more productive than ever.
